Emoji Free is the classic iPhone success story and that’s why we love it. It’s the tale of one man, Jon Kean, who started Awesomest Software in a quest to make it on his own. In his own words, “the hottest thing was iPhone development and it involved very little overhead” so he got into it.
Emoji Free was a surprise hit according to Kean. He saw an opportunity in that there were other Emoji apps, but no free ones. He thought there would be a real opportunity there for a free app monetized by ads, but didn’t realize how big it would be. He built the app in about two days and dropped in Mobclix ads. Now, Emoji Free has had about 1.3 million downloads, and it’s only been out for a month and a half.
His value proposition? “Instead of making 70 cents per person, I want to make a few cents per person but get a ridiculous number of users to monetize.” And a ridiculous number of users he has and he’s still getting 20,000 downloads a day. Congrats Jon, for being our featured mobster, keep up the good work!
