We interviewed Keith Murray Co-Founder of Drop D Studios to get the scoop on his app success:
1) Why did you decide to build an iPhone app?
“Tap Studio is a music rhythm game that lets you tap to any song you have in your library on your iPod touch or iPhone. We were frustrated by the limited music choices available with other rhythm tap games, and when the 3.0 OS opened up access to the media library on the device, we jumped at the opportunity to be the first to take advantage of this. We knew it was a popular genre, and we saw an opportunity to really provide a whole new level of fun and value to gamers!”
2) Why does the ad revenue model make sense for you?
“We knew that we wanted to release our base game free in order to break into the market. We also knew that if we were successful, we would provide additional functionality through a PRO paid application (and in-app purchases). So we thought that to help us get started we should try to monetize our free version. The simplest way to accomplish this was to integrate ads into the application.
We tried a couple of different ad providers, including direct ad provider SDKs, AdWhirl and Mobclix ad providers. We ended up settling on Mobclix as our sole provider due to the breadth of ad providers you manage and your overall service and support.”
3) What tips do you have for other developers?
“Have fun with your iPhone and iPod touch development! Of course this is serious business, but if you’re like a lot of other indie developers, this won’t be your day job. So if you take it too seriously you’ll burn yourself out.”
