Today Apple announced that the App Store hit 2 billion Downloads and 85,000 apps. The growth of the App Store has been staggering. Half a billion of those downloads happened this quarter alone. Apple doesn’t give out any more data on the breakdown of the App Store, so we dug into our analytics data to get some stats.
What do we know about those 85,000 Apps?
77.3% are paid Apps. Only 22.7% are Free. Yet, people download many more free apps than paid. For app publishers this means it’s much harder to get your app discovered in the paid app store.
Games and Entertainment make up 35% of the App Store. There are 20 categories total, but just two make up more than a third of the store.
The smallest five categories make up only 6.2% of the App Store. The smallest categories are (in increasing size) Weather, Medical, Finance, Photography, and Social Networking.
