[RECAP] MobileAppCon: Monetization of Mobile Apps Panel

Yesterday’s MobileAppCon was held on UCSF’s beautiful campus in Mission Bay at the Mission Bay Conference Center. The sun was shining
(a rare occurrence in San Francisco) and it was a perfect day for developers and members of the mobile app ecosystem to join in on the discussion of the future of mobile apps.

 

I was able to attend the Monetization of Mobile Apps panel where our CMO and Mobclix Co-Founder, Krishna Subramanian, joined the leaders of some of the hottest mobile app companies in the industry to discuss making money for your apps:

 

Brian Wong | CEO/Founder, Kiip

Thomas Chung | COO, The Playforge

Michael Oiknine | CEO, Apsalar

Alex Debelov | CEO, Virool

 

The discussion started off with each panelist sharing their thoughts on the current mobile ads ecosystem and on how each development platform lends itself to app monetization. Some other topics covered included the different ways to make money through your app (ad supported model, freemium model, in-app purchase model), how best to target your user base and creative examples of app monetization. Finally, the latter half of the panel was a brief Q&A session where conference attendees were able to pick the brains of the panelists about various topics ranging from how apps play into product discovery and mCommerce to reminiscing on critical turning points in each entrepreneur’s company’s growth.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • There is no single answer for mobile app monetization–try to experiment with advertising and other monetization tactics, see what works, and understand how to scale it
  • In-app purchases are a huge way to make money for your app, but it must be intrinsically interesting and make sense within the context of your app
  • When creating a monetization strategy, think outside the box–engage your users by making advertising into content
